As a breeder, words just can’t express the gratitude and joy I had at seeing Defining Purpose win the G3 Indiana Oaks and to win at her dam’s home track, Horseshoe Indianapolis.
I remember watching almost breathless when the horses were on the backstretch. Kenny had his
binoculars and when he said, “He’s got a lot of horse left”, it was music to my ears! As she turned for home and bolted down the stretch, I hopped up onto the rail and was screaming, cheering and flailing so much, that my exuberance almost landed me in a bucket of water quite literally!
As I stepped down off the rail, I felt my left foot tap the top of a water bucket. I do hope that near miss wasn’t caught on camera, because I know our voices were. Looking back, Kenny must have thought my daughter and I were from another planet! Defining Purpose seems to have matured even more since the Kentucky Oaks. She looked stronger and more settled. Flashbacks of Defining Purpose in her maiden and Ashland form came to mind as she raced so effortlessly, just like her dam, Defining Hope.
Congrats to Kenny, Greg, Brian, and the barn staff for doing such an amazing job preparing her for this race. Brian and Defining Purpose are an amazing team!
A special congratulations goes out to Defining Purpose’s new owner, Northern Farm- Katsumi Yoshida. I am looking forward to watching her journey continue with them as she continues to define her purpose. Lastly, thank you to Horseshoe Indianapolis and Caesar’s Entertainment for hosting a fun and successful Indiana Derby Day!
